The Military Almost Got the Right to Repair. Lawmakers Just Took It Away
The final language of the annual bill that funds the US military is in. It removes provisions that would have helped ensure service members' ability to fix their own equipment. US lawmakers have removed provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act for 2026 that would have ensured military members' right to repair their own equipment. The final language of the NDAA was shared by the House Armed Services Committee on Sunday, after weeks of delays pushed the annual funding bill to the end of the year. Among a host of other language changes made as part of reconciling different versions of the legislation drafted by the Senate and the House of Representatives, two provisions focused on the right to repair--Section 836 of the Senate bill and Section 863 of the House bill--have both been removed.

Google chatbot slammed for 'anti-American' claims about 'White Memorial Day'
While in New York for Fleet Week, active-duty members of the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard share suggestions for ways to commemorate Memorial Day. Google's artificial intelligence chatbot is being slammed for "anti-American" claims about the supposed White supremacist origins of Memorial Day. The Media Research Center (MRC) Free Speech America project, a conservative media watchdog, is calling out Google for alleged bias coded into its AI chatbot "Gemini" after the group found the bot said that Memorial Day is controversial for a range of reasons, including problems with "inclusivity and representation" from the Jim Crow era. A Google spokesperson has since distanced the company from the Gemini statements, saying that the response "does not reflect Google's opinion." MRC said it asked Gemini the question "Is Memorial Day controversial?" May 16.
Machine Learning Applications Related to Suicide in Military and Veterans: A Scoping Literature Review
Zhang, Yuhan, Wei, Yishu, Wang, Yanshan, Xiao, Yunyu, COL, null, Poropatich, Ronald K., Haas, Gretchen L., Zhang, Yiye, Weng, Chunhua, Liu, Jinze, Brenner, Lisa A., Bjork, James M., Peng, Yifan
Suicide remains one of the main preventable causes of death among active service members and veterans. Early detection and prediction are crucial in suicide prevention. Machine learning techniques have yielded promising results in this area recently. This study aims to assess and summarize current research and provides a comprehensive review regarding the application of machine learning techniques in assessing and predicting suicidal ideation, attempts, and mortality among members of military and veteran populations. A keyword search using PubMed, IEEE, ACM, and Google Scholar was conducted, and the PRISMA protocol was adopted for relevant study selection. Thirty-two articles met the inclusion criteria. These studies consistently identified risk factors relevant to mental health issues such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidal ideation, prior attempts, physical health problems, and demographic characteristics. Machine learning models applied in this area have demonstrated reasonable predictive accuracy. However, additional research gaps still exist. First, many studies have overlooked metrics that distinguish between false positives and negatives, such as positive predictive value and negative predictive value, which are crucial in the context of suicide prevention policies. Second, more dedicated approaches to handling survival and longitudinal data should be explored. Lastly, most studies focused on machine learning methods, with limited discussion of their connection to clinical rationales. In summary, machine learning analyses have identified a wide range of risk factors associated with suicide in military populations. The diversity and complexity of these factors also demonstrates that effective prevention strategies must be comprehensive and flexible.

U.S. Military trains service members to counter growing drone threat
At Fort Sill, service members from across the military are undergoing counter-drone training at the Joint C-sUAS (Counter small Unmanned Aircraft System) University (JCU), also known as "drone university." The program has become a critical part of the Military's efforts to combat the rapidly growing use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) by adversaries. "It's the Army's premier Counter-Small UAS training institution," said Col. Moseph Sauda, the program's director. "Our mission is to prepare and train the joint force to counter the threat, to be able to understand that threat, how they operate, and how they attack us… We can then develop not only tactics, techniques, and procedures, but also the employment methodology that maximizes the capabilities of our existing systems." A 3D-printed drone flies above from Oklahoma's Fort Sill at the U.S. Army's Joint C-sUAS University.

Iranian men charged in connection with fatal drone strike that killed three US soldiers
Breonna Moffett were the U.S. soldiers killed in the Iran-backed drone attack. Two Iranian men, including a dual Iranian American citizen, have been charged in connection with a fatal drone strike earlier this year that killed three U.S. military service members and injured dozens more. Mohammad Mahdi Sadeghi was arrested in Massachusetts and Mohammad Abedini was arrested in Italy and was in the custody of Italian authorities, federal prosecutors said. Both men are charged with export control violations. They are accused of exporting sensitive technology to Iran that was used in the fatal drone attack.

Pentagon lacks counter-drone procedure leading to incursions like at Langley, experts say
New reporting about over a dozen unidentified drones that were allowed to fly over Langley Air Force Base has prompted fresh calls for change to a threat that experts say will only become more prevalent. For more than two weeks in December 2023, the mystery drones traipsed into restricted airspace over the installation, home to key national security facilities and the F-22 Raptor stealth fighters. Experts say the incident is likely one of many that U.S. authorities are underprepared to tackle in an evolving threat environment. Lack of a standard protocol for such incursions left Langley officials unsure of what to do – other than allow the 20-foot-long drones to hover near their classified facilities. The Pentagon has said little about the incidents other than to confirm they occurred after a Wall Street Journal report this month.

US 'not looking for a war with Iran,' White House says, strikes designed to 'put an end' to attacks on troops
Fox News chief national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin has the latest on the retaliation against the drone attack on U.S. servicemembers in Jordan on'Your World.' The White House stressed Friday evening that the United States is "not looking for a war with Iran," saying the retaliatory strikes carried out in Syria and Iraq were designed to "de-escalate" tensions and "put an end" to attacks on U.S. troops in the region. The United States began retaliatory strikes on more than 85 targets in Iraq and Syria against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups and proxies. The strikes come in response to the deaths of three U.S. service members last Sunday on a U.S. base in Jordan. White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby stressed that the United States is not seeking conflict with Iran or in the Middle East, but explained that the strikes that began Friday evening "will not end" tonight.
